God Bless Us, Every One!

Just before the light of Christmas morning beams into Scrooge’s newly minted heart, the gloom of Christmas Yet-to-Come settles deep within the bowels of his soul.

Of all the apparitions, this is the one Scrooge fears most.

And, to the reader’s eye, this is certainly the most intimidating Spirit of them all!…

The Ghost of Christmas Present: A Journey Into Joy

From the prison to the poor-house, Scrooge discovers what life requires of us who have been given so much.  He also learns what life exacts from others when we hoard our resources and live from a place of scarcity rather than abundance.

The opening scene of Stave Three introduces us to the Ghost of Christmas Present.  Dickens invites the reader to imagine a lavish feast at a King’s table. A table overflowing with bounty and abundance.

Upon entering the room, Scrooge …

Wanting to Extinguish What Must Be Explored, Pt. 2

I remember the moment when my calling to minister within a congregational context solidified its hold on me.

As I recall, it was a moment filled with complexity and confusion.  It was a moment that required soul-searching prayer and heart-piercing surrender.

The prayer and surrender piece took all night.

Yes.

It was a chilly wintry evening, really down-right cold.

I was a student at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, entering my final three semesters, preparing to pursue a Ph.D. with plans to enter …

The Preteen Field is Drenched in Blood and Porn is its Reaper!

Are you one of those who still believe that Porn and civility can coexist?

Many do.

I know that correlation (we detect a relationship between the proliferation of porn and violence in our culture) and causation (porn proliferation can be traced directly to, or is the cause of, abuse and violence among teens) are two very different things.

But it doesn’t take a statistician to know that Porn is reaping a bloody harvest in what should be our …

Vero Beach, It’s Time We Begin to Believe Again! A State Championship is Coming to Town!

Billy Livings is a legend in these parts.  Rightly so.

As the Fighting Indian head football coach, his teams won year, after year, after year, after year.

Vero’s last state championship win (in 1981) is indelibly attached to his name.

I had the privilege watching some of his teams in the late 90s.  My wife, a Vero girl, had the privilege of attending school and cheering on the sidelines during the Livings Legendary Era.…

A Dozen (or so) Alarming Trends Directly Related to Porn Addiction, Pt. 4

As I reflect on my past of porn consumption/addiction, I cannot recall one moment of mutual consent.

In fact, the experience of viewing pornography is discordant on every level. While enticing one with passion, delight, and satisfaction, pornography is cloaked in power, domination, and self-absorption.

In short order, it’s all about consumption. The consumer both consumes and is consumed!

Porn consumption (a.k.a, viewing) ignites an insatiable urge to, first visually and then physically, consume the flesh of …

That’s the year social media apps began to explode on smartphones and tablets.

It’s also the year when most …

It’s made its way to our shores and recently claimed the life of a 15 year-old  Texas child.

It’s time you learn what it is, how to prepare your child, and ways to …

Social Media: You Child is Spending NINE Hours a Day On It!

Social media apps are saturated with porn.  Porn is not, however, the only problem.  The problems associated with social media, particularly among the generation raised with unfettered access to social media, range from lack of trust to a loss of hope.

Note the lament of a teenager raised in the digital age.  While her voice is her own, it’s one familiar to and representative of so many more:

“I have terrible trust issues.  Ever since middle school and …

Football, Formation, and Faith, Pt. 5: Vision Precedes Victory

The past few weeks, temps have swelled above 90 degrees with humidity over 70% and a heat index that often makes it feel well over 100 degrees down here in South Florida.

Yet, throughout the South Florida region, football teams are running two-hour+ practices to get ready for the upcoming season.

Why expend so much effort during the most unbearable part of the year?

Vision, that’s why.…
