Five Reasons Why I Am A Man Against Porn

I am an outspoken critic of porn.  I am also a proponent of putting an end to the global industry it has spawned.

My goal in all of this, however, is to offer hope and encouragement to men and women who struggle with compulsive sexual behavior disorders.

Most, if not all of these disorders, are connected to porn consumption and/or addiction!

This “work” against porn, in support of love (yes, the two are mutually exclusive) began over ten years ago.

My purpose is to help bring an end to the porn-culture and eradicate it within my lifetime.

The more I speak against porn, the more I find people who think it’s silly to do so.  Many argue that porn doesn’t harm anyone.  Others contend that if it is a problem, then its a private problem.

Porn is the New Public Health Crisis

Yet, in spite of the entrenched belief that porn isn’t a problem, more and more scientific and empirical evidence is pointing in the other direction.

In other words, it’s becoming clearer and clearer that pornography is a public health crisis and that porn-addiction is one of the central addictions of this century.  But, in this post, I am not going to point to all the statistics.  I am just going to offer you some reasons (from a practitioners perspective) why I am a man against porn and why you should be too!

Five Reasons Why I am Against Porn and You Should Be Too!

One: Women don’t believe that a man (or men) can stand up against porn.

A few years ago, I joined a group of like-minded men and women who launched the organization, MenAgainstPorn.  Since that time, I’ve received hundreds of messages from women who simply cannot believe that there are actually men who don’t like and stand against porn.  I love it when I am able to tell them that there are many of us men who are fighting against porn.

So, when you – as a man – take a stand against porn, you empower women to believe that there are good men in this world and begin to hope that not all men are pigs.

Two: Viewing porn impacts how you view women.

Yes, this is simple.  If you habitually consume porn, you are rewiring your brain.  As this happens, you begin to view women as something slightly less than human.  You turn them into an object to be used at your leisure and discarded at your pleasure.  You then become one of those guys who can’t take their eyes off of a woman’s body part.  You’re like a leech, sucking the blood and life out of the host body.

Three: Porn fuels rape culture.

I like to state this in more blatant terms: Porn encourages and causes rape.  The evidence is clear.  Yet, when I make statements like this I often hear, “correlation isn’t causation.”  Implying of course that we can never fully support the statement.  I am not even going to try to do so here but I will provide a link to a more persuasive voice on the matter.

Four: Porn fuels sexual distortion and, most notably, sex-trafficking.

Porn is like gasoline to the fire that is sex-trafficking.  It simply enflames it.  This reality also prevents you from asserting that porn is a private problem.  Every time you view porn you are supporting, assisting, encouraging, and – at the very least – tolerating, the growth of the child sex trade.

Five: Porn is a trap.  It is an addiction

Many of you reading this may very well be trapped in the cycle of “shame, consume, despair” that porn nurtures.  You know that it’s like a prison with no gate, yet you can’t leave the cell.  I’ve been there.  You think no one else understands but that’s not true.  Many, many, men (and an increasing number of women) are trapped as well.

When you finally decide to take a stand – a public stand – declaring that you are standing against porn, you actually give other people hope that it’s possible to break free.  Porn is a trap but it’s one with a false door.  You can walk (crawl if you have to) through into your freedom.

Yes, you will have to fight to maintain your freedom for the rest of your life.  But as other people see you fighting, they will believe that what they see in you is actually possible for them.

There is a sixth reason I am a man against porn.  It is that I have two grown sons and one grown daughter.  They belong to the generation we’ve allowed porn to rape and pillage for years.  I want better for them and the children they may bring into this world.

I believe the way to make things better is to eradicate porn, period!

Well, those are my thoughts.

Again, I write as a practitioner, not a professional.  As such, I am expressing opinions.  And, though they are opinions, I realize they are strong ones.

I welcome any and all thoughtful and civil responses or disagreements.

Disrupting to Renew!
